CHAPTER 11

“What do you mean?” Brigid asked. “Like they were stolen?” Surely that wasn’t possible? How could that be possible? Didn’t they have precautions in place to make sure something like this didn’t happen?

“I guess that’s the best way to put it, yes,” Molly admitted. “I won’t lie to you, because that’s not how I do business. I could sugarcoat it and simply say we misplaced them, but there’s only so many places they could be, and they aren’t here. Not a single item that was on these mannequins last night can be found. The only way I can explain it is that someone took them.”

“Should I call the police?” Felix asked. “Or grab Jazz?” He was clearly worried, and why wouldn’t he be? This was unprecedented.

Molly squinted her eyes as she thought about what to do, her lips pursed. “Bringing the police in is a risk,” she said. “They’ll take photos which could be leaked to our competitors, and then everyone will know what we’re working on.”

She sighed heavily. “I’ve worked on this quietly in the background for so long, to have it all exposed at this point would be to have done everything for nothing.” She was clearly struggling with what she thought would be the best thing to do, call the police and find the thief, or keep the secrecy of the proposed new line intact.

“Brigid can help,” Fiona chimed in. “She works with our local sheriff’s department all the time as a consultant. She’s found missing people and even caught murderers. If she could do that, I’m sure she could find the person who stole some clothes.” She turned to Brigid with hope in her eyes. “Right?”

Not quite sure how she should respond, Brigid sat there in shock. She wasn’t exactly sure what was happening at the moment and wondered if she should even get involved.

Felix looked from Brigid and Fiona to Molly. “What do you want me to do?” Everyone was looking to Molly for direction.

She debated for a moment, biting on her lip. Molly was obviously conflicted by following the rules and keeping her business safe. Eventually, she made a decision.

“Don’t say anything to anyone,” Molly told Felix. “Whoever did this works here. They have to. We have to keep this quiet if we’re going to find the culprit. If they know we’re looking for them, they’ll try to hide.” She looked at Brigid, her gaze intense. “Can you help find them?”

Brigid shifted back and forth in her seat, somewhat uncomfortable as the recipient of Molly’s intense gaze. “I don’t see why not,” she finally said. “If it’s one of your employees, they should be relatively easy to sniff out with a few well-placed questions, as long as no one disappears.”

She hoped by answering like that she wasn’t exaggerating her abilities, but it was clear Fiona really needed her right now. This was her big chance, and Brigid was not going to let something like this stand in the way.

It infuriated her to think that whoever had done this was trying to stop Fiona from realizing her dream.
